El féretro abierto del papa Francisco, llevado en procesión a hombros por los ‘sediarios’ pontificios y escoltado por la Guardia Suiza, llegó a la basílica de San Pedro y fue colocado ante el Altar de la Confesión antes de que los fieles puedan darle el último adiós.
La ceremonia del traslado del féretro del papa Francisco, que falleció este lunes a los 88 años, de la capilla de Santa Marta, comenzó a las 9.00 hora local (7.00 GMT ) desde la que fue su residencia, a la basílica de San Pedro.
La procesión recorrió la plaza de Santa Marta y la plaza de los Protomartires Romanos y atravesó el Arco de las Campanas hasta salir a la plaza de San Pedro y entró en la Basílica Vaticana por la puerta central. El féretro estaba precedido por los cardenales presentes en Roma mientras que cerraban la procesión las personas que más cerca estuvieron del pontífice, sus secretarios y sus asistentes.
El féretro fue colocado frente a la tumba de San Pedro y enfrente del imponente baldaquino de Bernini.
Las imágenes del Vaticano mostraron la capilla de Santa Marta, donde Francisco ha sido velado en las últimas horas, con los cardenales presentes en Roma sentados en los bancos en espera de que comenzara la procesión a la basílica vaticana.
El cardenal camarlengo, Kevin Joseph Farrell, esparció agua bendita sobre el féretro con los restos mortales y después leyó: «Con gran conmoción acompañamos los restos de nuestro querido papa Francisco desde esta capilla a la basílica vaticana, donde ha ejercido su ministerio como obispo de la iglesia de Roma y apóstol de la iglesia universal».
Mientras, cientos de medios llegados de todo el mundo captan este momento desde el ‘Braccio di Carlomagno’, la terraza sobre la columnata de San Pedro y los fieles esperan congregados junto a la plaza poder darle el último adiós a partir de las 11.00 hora local (9.00 GMT).
En el interior de la basílica se fueron colocando los obispos y cardenales, así como también el personal del Vaticano para escuchar la liturgia de la Palabra que celebrará el cardenal camarlengo. EFE
